Who are we?
Midnight Howl is a small, family-owned business based in Santa Cruz, California. I started it because dogs have always been a huge part of our lives, and I wanted to make shirts that actually felt like they were designed by people who understand what it is like to live with them.
And when I say I love dogs, I really mean it. I work at a local animal shelter, so dogs are a pretty big part of my life both at home and at work. I see their personalities, their weird habits, their resilience, and unfortunately, I also see how many of them end up needing someone to give them another chance.
The dog on the right is my dog, Banjo. He is a German Shepherd/Malinois mix who ended up at the shelter and was placed on the euthanasia list. One of my coworkers pulled him and we ended up co-fostering him. Somewhere along the way I completely fell in love with him, and Banjo became part of our family.
Stories like his are a big part of why this business means so much to me.
Why T-Shirts?
It started when my dog Sammy passed away from Cushing's disease. I wanted to memorialize him on a shirt. I came up with all kinds of funny designs and things that made me laugh in a time that my family was mourning. I wanted to keep his memory going on forever, so I thought I would see if I could get other people to wear shirts with his face on them. Then I added other dogs as well and that is pretty much how I ended up with a whole shop full of shirts with dogs on them haha!
For me, this isn't just a dog-themed clothing store. This is a way for me to express myself and have fun with other lovers of dogs in helping them express themselves as well. Dogs are a huge part of my life. I work with them, I come home to them, and apparently now I make shirts about them too because it's pretty fun!
At the end of the day, I just want to make fun, original dog shirts for people who are every bit as obsessed with their dogs as I am. And I also want to one day be walking around and see my dogs face on someones shirts : )
